CANDY

“Candy” is a textile installation by Johanna Ulfsak consisting of approximately 17 meters of handwoven

fabric accessible from 360 degrees. The tangled composition is an abstract silhouette of eccentricity sculpted to highlight the peculiarity of each different part - a homage to weaving technology, materials and color.

Fragile upper part consists of different silks, wool, and viscose. Natural plant and gradient synthetical dyes play a color game together. Which will fade in time, which will persevere? Two parts of the fabric meet in a knot and emerge from it like a waterfall- a golden stream of kitsch followed by the “grandmother”- a camouflage in tapestry technique. Various materials are used: Hungarian pig hair, handspun dog hair, luxurious chenille, mohair, embroidery thread, reflective yarns, as well as polyester leftovers from local fabric store. The stream continues on both sides of the knot into two images. On the front is a picture of people relaxing on a beach, behind are silk flowers faded by time at a cemetery. 12 meters of silk fabric, cut into strips and woven back together into a blurred version of themselves, accompanied with shibori folded polyester fabrics. “Candy” ends with a metallic tartan pattern doing splits on the floor.
